The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BCE between the Greek forces, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Persian army, led by King Xerxes I. The Persians had invaded Greece with a massive army to expand their empire. The Greek forces, despite the fact that they were vastly outnumbered, were able to delay the Persian advance for three days at a narrow pass known as Thermopylae. The Greek soldiers fought valiantly, using their superior weapons and tactics to hold off the Persian attack. However, on the third day, a traitor showed the Persians a secret goat path that led behind the Greek lines, allowing them to outflank and defeat the Greeks. King Leonidas, along with 300 of his warriors, stayed behind to fight to the death while the rest of the army retreated. The Battle of Thermopylae has become a symbol of bravery and heroic sacrifice, and its story continues to inspire people around the world.
